Dear Krok Alumni, Honoraries, and our friends and family from across the globe,
On behalf of the Harvard Krokodiloes of 2022, it is my distinct honor to welcome you here in Cambridge to celebrate our 75th Anniversary. This weekend, The Kroks – Harvard’s oldest and finest a cappella singing group – will celebrate 75 years of singing, tradition, camaraderie, travel, our relationship with The Hasty Pudding Club, and Krokdom. If you are interested in the complete history of our group, you can check out krokarchives.com.
The Krok tradition has never been stronger. Over the past two years, 134 Kroks came together virtually from their homes to produce 2 albums and 38 songs in our Year to Remember Project, led by Channy Hong ’22. Kroks from the 1950s to the 2020s contributed their ever-strong voices to revive old hits like Stormy Weather and My One And Only Love, and to help each other last through the pandemic with our music and brotherhood. Additionally, the Undergraduates of 2021 released our first ever Christmas Album.
Tonight, you will hear from Kroks throughout the years. The Kroks of the 1970’s, led by Peter Mansfield ’76, will take the stage, showcasing the jazz standards musical tradition that helped establish the long-lasting Krok sound. These Kroks began our deep relationship with Leonard Bernstein and also launched our annual Spring Trip to Bermuda, a tradition that lasts to this day. Joining them will be some Kroks from the 1960’s, when we first joined the jet age and began tours to the Caribbean, India, and Europe.
The Kroks of the 1980s, made up of the “Dinosaurs”, led by Stuart Malina ’84 and “Par Avion”, will delight us in the songs that first launched us throughout the globe with the backing of Maestro Bernstein. While the Kroks of 1982 may have been the first to launch the Summer Tour, led by Gordon Bloom ’82, and then to initiate an Around The World tour in ’86, the Kroks haven’t stopped. Our annual Summer Tour has become integral to the core of who we are, and we are keen to revive it as we reenter the world post-Covid.
Next, the Kroks of the 1990s and 2000s will feature songs that have become Krok institutions in and of themselves, songs like Danny Boy, Take the A Train and L-O-V-E. Led by Tom Wionzek ’08, this era oversaw our journey into the new century and expanded both our repertoire and our tours, taking us to places like Australia, Africa, and South America.
As the final alumni group, over 50 Kroks from the last 10 years will make up the Kroks of the 2010s and 2020s, led by Ben Nelson ’11 and Josh Bean ’16. These Kroks will be performing the songs that have defined the Krok experience in recent memory, including Every Time We Say Goodbye, arranged by Todd Fletcher ’91. This also marks the return to the Sanders stage of the members of K’20, just two years after their year was cut short.
On behalf of the Harvard Krokodiloes of 2022, we are honored to share the stage tonight with these friends of ours and to be reminded that our journey together is well-storied and bigger than any of us can comprehend. Our history is one defined by life-long friendships, savvy entrepreneurship and risk-taking, and an unending commitment and affinity for jazz a cappella music. K’22 is just one chapter in that long story, but one that we are beyond delighted to share with you this evening.
Despite two years of separation, a year postponed, and all of the tumult in between, the The Harvard Krokodiloes have once again gathered at Sanders Theatre to celebrate our 75 years of existence. So sit back, relax, and enjoy what will be a very, very long evening.
Nunc Est Cantandum,
Will Granger
General Manager of the Krokodiloes of 2022
The Krokodiloes of 2022 are thrilled to host and take part in this weekend’s 75th Anniversary. The Krokodiloes are Harvard’s oldest a cappella singing group, and this year’s K’22 is eager to celebrate our music and our history. After two years of virtual Krok groups, K’22 has been at the forefront of reigniting the Krok tradition and making new ones along the way.
K’22 got off to its start in September 2021, bringing back six Kroks (Will Granger ’22, Kieran Anderson ’23, Jongtae Jeon ’22, Jonathan D’Souza ’24, Jeffrey Ding ’22, and Eton Shon ’24) and welcoming six new brothers into the Kroks family (Joey Griffith ’22, Ian Hayes ’22, Hari Narayanan ’24, Rick Zhou ’25, Cyril Leahy ’25, Gregor Kossmann ’25). Our first trip together was to the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire for our Annual Retreat, graciously hosted by our very own Lynn Weigel ’70 (thanks Lynn!).
The Fall saw the Kroks entertain audiences across New England, from various events in the Boston area to a trip down to New Haven for the Harvard-Yale game in November. We took the stage at Sanders Theater in December for the first time in over two years, delighting our audiences with the Great American Songbook, including the live debuts of a few of our new Christmas songs!
In January, the K’22 hit the road and embarked on a three-week Winter Tour, visiting Philadelphia, New York, San Juan, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Punta Cana. We performed in schools, at resorts and hotels, and hosted many public performances along the way, connecting with old friends and making new ones. Upon returning to campus, we serended Jennifer Gardner, the Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year, and went on our annual Spring Trip to Bermuda just two weeks ago. We are also looking forward to our 11 week, 5+ continent, 20+ country Summer Tour, our first since 2019.
The Kroks of 2022 hope you all enjoy tonight’s performance, from the old to the new. We want to thank everyone who helped make this weekend possible, particularly Larry Wasserman ’96, Frank DeSimone ’09, and Peter Wu ’16, who undertook the daunting task of organizing this Anniversary. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
